The Cleveland Guardians have reached a pivotal stretch in their 2025 season.
This demanding schedule arrives as the team pursues a playoff berth, making every rotation decision critical for their postseason hopes.
Cleveland has implemented a six-man rotation to navigate this challenging period.
The strategy aims to protect their young pitching staff while maintaining effectiveness through the season’s final weeks.
Cleveland analyst Bruce Drennan recently broke down the decision on his podcast, while sharing his thoughts.
“They’re young pitchers. I don’t mind [the six-man rotation] because they’re all young. There are times, like this example, where it’s warranted. I don’t blame them, with Carl Willis advising young manager Stephen Vogt to do so with this group, especially going into the stretch drive and possibly into the playoffs. We’re going to be deep if we do get in, that’s for sure,” Drennan said.

Manager Stephen Vogt and pitching coach Carl Willis chose this approach over the traditional five-man rotation to provide extra recovery time.
Starters Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams, Slade Cecconi, Logan Allen, Joey Cantillo, and Parker Messick posted a collective 2.62 ERA during the month.
That performance ranked second among all Major League Baseball rotations.
Vogt has emphasized how additional rest helps maintain pitcher effectiveness during intense scheduling periods.
Willis has focused on refining pitch selections and monitoring arm health to sustain performance levels.
Their collaboration has created a rotation built on precision and durability rather than pure velocity.
The six-man rotation represents a calculated gamble as Cleveland enters the season’s final stretch.
This forward-thinking adjustment could prove decisive in preserving the team’s competitive edge through a potential playoff run.
