The Cleveland Guardians entered the 2025 season with optimism about their bullpen depth.
However, questions have emerged about their ability to hold late-inning leads consistently.
The transition to closer has created uncertainty around Cade Smith and whether he can handle the pressure.
Analyst Bruce Drennan recently weighed in on Smith’s performance and future with the organization, expressing concerns about him as a long-term closer for the Guardians.
“I hate to say it. I took for granted he would just slide into that position and be the next [Emmanuel] Clase. But [they] don’t come along every 2-3 years automatically, you know. So yes, I am (concerned). That doesn’t mean to say he can’t come back next year, Smith, and be great. But yes, yes, to answer very simply,” Drennan said.
"I took for GRANTED he would just slide into that position and be the next Clase."

After Clase was put on leave due to an MLB gambling investigation, Smith took over as the closer, moving from his success in the setup role.
His early results were impressive, with an 0.96 ERA and an 0.64 WHIP in 12.2 innings.
He collected four saves and three wins during that stretch.
Smith does have five blown saves this season, which highlight the challenges of ninth-inning pressure.
The role demands mental toughness beyond raw talent.
The Guardians’ bullpen has been a bright spot amid rotation and offensive inconsistencies.
Heavy usage of key relievers could become problematic over a full season, especially with limited left-handed options available.
Smith’s development remains crucial for the organization’s competitive window.
Elite closers are rare commodities that take time to develop properly.
Success in lower-leverage situations doesn’t guarantee ninth-inning effectiveness.
So, the front office faces some decisions about Smith’s role moving forward.
