Brayan Rocchio made a play Monday night that the baseball world could not stop watching, and MLB’s official account made sure everyone saw it.
With the Guardians clinging to a 5-5 tie in the eighth inning and runners on the corners, Cleveland needed a big play to escape the jam. Rocchio delivered one that will be talked about for a long time.
“Brayan Rocchio gets the @CLEGuardians out of a jam with an UNREAL double play,” MLB posted.

Jazz Chisholm Jr., one of the fastest runners in the American League, hit a sharp ground ball up the middle with one out and runners on the corners. Rocchio slid to his right, made a backhanded stop near second base, slapped the bag with his glove while dropping to his right knee, and fired a strike to first base to complete the double play before Chisholm could reach the bag.
The play kept the game tied at five and gave Cleveland a chance to win it in the ninth and tenth innings. The Guardians ultimately fell 7-5 in ten innings when Cody Bellinger delivered a two-run single off Shawn Armstrong, but Rocchio’s play in the eighth was the kind of moment that transcends the final score and reminds everyone watching why defense at the highest level is its own form of artistry.
The 25-year-old shortstop from Caracas, Venezuela has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the Cleveland season. He moved from second base to shortstop when Gabriel Arias went down in early April and has not only held the position but elevated his entire game. He is batting .284 on the season with five home runs, 29 RBI, a .770 OPS, and 11 stolen bases. The Guardians are 31-20 when Rocchio starts at shortstop, a record that tells the story of how much his presence anchors the Cleveland infield.
Monday night’s play will find its way into Rocchio highlight packages for years. The Guardians lost the game. But they gained another example of exactly why Rocchio has become one of the most exciting players in the American League.
