There have been multiple bright spots for the Cleveland Guardians this season, which is how a team can have one of the best records in the American League. Though expectations were high for players like Chase DeLauter, Travis Bazzana, Gavin Williams, and Parker Messick, they arguably are exceeding them with their outstanding campaigns to date.
In addition, Angel Martinez and Daniel Schneemann have had excellent stretches as well. That has given the Guardians some necessary production from unexpected sources.
However, no one has been as much of a surprise as Brayan Rocchio, who is quietly evolving into one of the AL’s best hitters, based on his rankings among shortstops.
“Brayan Rocchio turning into one of the best offensive SS in the American League is one of the sneaky best storylines in all of baseball this season,” Mike Lucas posted.

Entering Cleveland’s series against the Boston Red Sox, among American League shortstops, Rocchio ranks first in batting average (.298), third in OPS (.801), third in WAR (1.9), fifth in RBIs (27), and ninth in home runs (4). That is notable because Rocchio didn’t even begin this season as Cleveland’s starter.
Rocchio held off a spring training threat from prospects Bazzana and Juan Brito to keep the starting second base job, where he finished last season. Gabriel Arias was Cleveland’s starting shortstop on Opening Day, and he remained there until going on the injured list April 7 with a quad strain.
Brito was called up to play second base, and Rocchio moved over to shortstop, where he played 72 games at his more natural position last season. Bazzana was eventually called up to replace Brito, and Rocchio stayed at short, helping Bazzana adapt along the way.
Even more notable is the fact that Rocchio is providing all of that offense while batting ninth in the order. All but 21 of his 178 at-bats this season have come from that spot, which makes his RBI total and 25 runs scored even more impressive.
Now in his fourth season, Rocchio could earn his first AL All-Star Game appearance. However, the competition is likely to be stiff with Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals the likely starter, and Detroit Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle and Colson Montgomery of the Chicago White Sox, other strong contenders.
Meanwhile, Arias is just now starting to ramp up his baseball activities, so Rocchio will continue to be a very important player for the Guardians.
