The Cleveland Guardians went into the 2026 season with major questions in the outfield. Angel Martinez was a big piece of the puzzle last year, but his bat left a lot to be desired with a measly .628 OPS across 446 at-bats. Because of that performance, there were a lot of questions over the offseason about how long of a leash he’d get this year.
With young prospects emerging such as Chase DeLauter, George Valera, and CJ Kayfus, there was a lot of pressure on Martinez to increase his production at the plate to continue seeing regular at-bats heading into this year. After a big spring training, it became clear that Martinez had made some adjustments this offseason, and Wednesday’s massive performance in a 10-2 win over the Kansas City Royals was evidence of that hard work.
Martinez exploded for four hits on Wednesday, including a huge grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to officially put the game out of reach. It was his second career slam and his first four runs driven in on the year, which also helped bring his OPS up to an outstanding .895 on the young season.

Chase DeLauter’s torrid start to his rookie campaign already has some people clamoring for the front office to lock him up long term. Valera’s return is imminent, and Steven Kwan is seeing more and more time in center field this year despite being a perennial Gold Glove winner in left.
None of that is a recipe for Martinez to thrive, but he does have the ability to hit from both sides of the plate, which gives manager Stephen Vogt a path to getting him in the lineup since everyone else in the outfield is a lefty. With more days like he had on Wednesday, Martinez will only force Vogt’s hand even more, especially with CJ Kayfus off to a slow start.
The Guardians are off to an excellent 8-5 start despite playing exclusively strong opponents up to this point. Congrats to Martinez on a big day, and hopefully this is the beginning of a nice hot streak for him.
