The Cleveland Guardians had a difficult choice at the trade deadline.
Emmanuel Clase’s absence due to an MLB gambling investigation complicated the team’s plan for some of its players.
Fortunately, they managed to hold on to Steven Kwan, who was also named in multiple trade rumors.
However, Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report believes fans shouldn’t celebrate, as he claims there is still a chance that the Guardians will part with their All-Star outfielder.
Kwan was arguably the best position player who could’ve been available at the trade deadline.
He’s under team control through the 2027 season, and he’s making a reasonable salary until then.
With that in mind, it made sense that the Guardians were looking to get a king’s ransom for him. Otherwise, they had no incentive to trade him.
For months, the Guardians have talked about their desire to keep Kwan in Cleveland for the long run.
However, the lack of updates regarding a potential contract extension makes it seem as if that’s not imminent.
Now, they have some more time to get back to negotiations to try to reach an agreement.
If that’s not the case, there could be even more teams looking to acquire him this coming offseason, and the Guardians might get an acceptable return then.
