The Cleveland Guardians wrapped up the first half with a 51-46 record and a four-game winning streak. They became the first team to sweep the Miami Marlins at their home this season and currently share first place in the AL Central with the Chicago White Sox.
After not really spending much money in the offseason, the Guardians have exceeded expectations and remain in contention for a third straight division title. Considering that, right now, they have been playing without Jose Ramirez and Angel Martinez, seeing them up top is impressive.
What the Guardians have shown in their current four-game winning streak might be a blueprint of what they need to do to secure postseason contention and a long run in October. Their starting pitching has been excellent, their bullpen has been much improved, and their offense has been opportune, even if it isn’t a dominant unit.
“I was really nervous that this thing was going to get away from them, completely. Instead, the pitching performances they’ve had, that’s awesome. That gives you a shot. Kwan, the last 15 days, batting .325. I think you see a more confident approach from him. You’re looking for indicators of what are we gonna be able to do down the stretch and into the postseason that gives you an actual chance to compete? It’s this. It’s dominant starting pitching. Your bullpen was much better,” analyst Anthony Lima said.
"I was really nervous that this thing was going to get away from them, completely. They were outstanding."

For a brief time in June and early July, it looked like the Guardians would slip away from contention. Before winning their last four games, they lost the four that came before that. In June, they went 10-15.
But this team is resilient and just won’t give up. When the offense struggled badly, Khalil Watson carried the squad in an important stretch in June. And now that the rookie is struggling badly, the likes of Brayan Rocchio and Chase DeLauter have surged. Even Kwan has improved considerably.
The most impressive part of the Guardians’ roster, however, is the pitching. The unit as a whole has allowed a total of seven runs in its four-game winning streak, fewer than two per game. Every starter has done his job, and key bullpen figures such as Colin Holderman and Franco Aleman have helped Cleveland overcome Erik Sabrowski’s recent struggles and support Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith in the late innings.
Right now, the Guardians are looking excellent heading into the All-Star break. Can they keep up the form when play resumes?
