The Cleveland Guardians have the best third baseman in all of baseball. Unfortunately, he has yet to get that type of recognition.
Jose Ramirez is a well-known superstar. However, even though he’s probably been the most consistent player in the American League, he hasn’t posted the best single-season numbers. With that in mind, Mike Axisa of CBS Sports claimed that it’s about time he gets an MVP.
In his latest column, he chose an MVP for Jose Ramirez as the perfect Holiday gift idea for the Guardians organization:
“An MVP for Ramírez,” Axisa wrote. “Another year, another top-three finish in the American League MVP voting for José Ramírez. He now has four career top-three finishes plus three other top-six finishes. Ramírez’s six top-five finishes in the MVP voting are tied with Hall of Famer Eddie Murray for the most ever without winning the award. That’s what happens when you’ve been stuck in the same league as Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge, who have combined to win the last five AL MVPs. Make no mistake though, Ramírez is an MVP-caliber player. Finally winning it would be a swell holiday gift.”
There’s a strong chance that Jose Ramirez will go down as the greatest position player in franchise history, at least numbers-wise. He’s been the best player in his position for the best part of a decade, and he will continue to make history and set new marks almost every time he sets foot on the field.
That said, his small-market, non-vocal presence and the fact that Aaron Judge will continue to go strong in the AL will most definitely take a toll on his chances. That’s not fair, but it’s just the way it goes.
No one can argue that Ramirez has been the most consistent player, and his floor is probably higher than 90 percent of players. You always know what you’re going to get with him. His ceiling, however, has probably not been as impressive as that of other stars. Still, Ramirez deserves all the credit in the world for what he’s been able to accomplish in this league.
He’s not slowing down any time soon, so hopefully, he’ll finally win the award at some point in the future.
