The Cleveland Guardians are fighting admirably to chase down that elusive final American League Wild Card berth, as they have now won six of their last seven games, though they have been unable to make up ground since the Seattle Mariners have now won six in a row.
Seattle’s winning streak has gotten them to a tie for first place in the AL West, so the Guardians are now chasing the Houston Astros as well in an effort to overcome a 3.5-game deficit with just 16 games left to play.
While speaking on Thursday’s episode of Bonus Time with Bruce Drennan, Ryan Tyler wondered if the Guardians getting to the playoffs would be “fool’s gold” and questioned if they even have what it takes to do anything once they get there.
“The Guardians, they kept pushing us away just to bring us back in. And they’ve once again brought us back in, and it would be very rude of them if, this late in the season, they push us away once again. It’s exciting to get to the playoffs, then you get to the question, ‘If you get there, is it fool’s gold?’ But in baseball, anything can happen. All you need is an entry to the door, and you can dance your heart away,” Tyler said.

Given how dangerous the field is in the American League, it’s entirely possible the Guardians could be one-and-done in the postseason, but as Tyler acknowledged, all you need is a ticket to the dance.
Baseball has the most random outcomes and the most even playing field in American professional sports when it comes to the playoffs, as we have seen surprising teams go on deep runs time and time again over the years.
Cleveland has a three-game series at home against the Chicago White Sox this weekend, which is a great matchup to have in its quest to chase down a Wild Card spot, though the Sox have been playing quite well since the All-Star break and are not to be taken lightly.
Every game is a must-win for the Guardians at this point if they plan on pulling off the unthinkable.
