The Cleveland Guardians are in the mix for a playoff spot.
They may not be the strongest contender, but the field is always leveled in the postseason, and anything can happen in that situation.
That’s why they shouldn’t look to go through a panic sale or move on from any of their big-name players before the upcoming trade deadline.
Instead, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report said they should target a specific position and need.
“Add Multiple Outfield Bats,” Miller wrote. “Maybe Cleveland limps into the deadline and doesn’t see the point in buying, even with both Shane Bieber and John Means on their way back from Tommy John surgery. But if Emmanuel Clase is off the table, the Guardians don’t stand to gain much of anything by selling, either. If they do end up buying, multiple outfielders has to be the goal, as they’ve got a serious ‘Steven Kwan or Bust’ situation on their hands.”
The Guardians are unlikely to make a big move or give up prominent prospects to get a star. That’s just not the way they’ve conducted business or approached the trade deadline.
Then again, that doesn’t mean they can’t find value in lesser players who may not have had the opportunity to prove their worth with their current team.
There were some rumors about Kwan potentially being on the trade market because he has yet to sign a contract extension with the Guardians.
Yet, there’s no financial incentive to move him as he is under club control through the 2027 season.
The Guardians have shown signs of life over the past couple of weeks, and it looks like their offense is waking up after going through a major slump in June.
If they can find more production from their outfield and the middle of the lineup, they could be a legitimate dark horse in the playoffs.
