The Cleveland Guardians sacrificed a lot of important resources to bring in starting pitcher Luis Ortiz from the Pittsburgh Pirates back in the off-season.
Andres Giménez, a fan favorite, was the primary piece going to the Toronto Blue Jays for Cleveland to get Spencer Horwitz, the player they flipped to Pittsburgh to obtain Ortiz and some prospects.
Ortiz hasn’t been the most consistent pitcher if we take his entire 2025 statistical output, but he has turned a corner recently and has finally hit his stride.
On Wednesday, he dominated the New York Yankees in the Bronx, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings and helping the Guardians earn a 4-0 shutout win against a top offense.
He allowed just three hits and three walks, striking out seven.
His last seven starts have yielded a 2.77 ERA, a sign that he is turning into the pitcher we all thought he would be.
“Luis Ortiz in his last 7 starts: 39.1 IP, 40 K, 2.77 ERA, 1.30 WHIP. He shut out the highest-scoring team in the AL tonight,” Just Baseball posted on X.

For the season, Ortiz’s ERA is a good, but not great 4.04.
It tells you how inconsistent he was before his recent seven-start run.
Even if his WHIP during those games is still a tad high at 1.30, he has produced a sub-3.00 ERA with more than a strikeout per inning.
The Guardians took a promising, pitch-to-contact hurler and have been slowly turning him into a strikeout machine.
After a few weeks, he is finally getting swings and misses and punchouts without sacrificing his ERA in the process.
Ortiz has come a long way since spring training and deserves much credit for his turnaround, as does the organization.
