The Cleveland Guardians knew all along that the likelihood of a Josh Naylor trade was high entering the off-season.
And while they have Kyle Manzardo ready to be an everyday contributor, they never stopped looking for a potential complementary option, platoon partner or just someone to compete for reps with him.
They were reportedly interested in Paul Goldschmidt and other mid-tier options in free agency, but ended up deciding to bring back an old friend of the franchise: Carlos Santana.
He put pen to paper on a one-year, $12 million deal.
Tom Withers of the Associated Press revealed more details about the contract.
“More details on Carlos Santana’s $12 million contract with Guardians. He can earn an additional $1.2 million in bonuses for plate appearances: $200,000 for 500 and each additional 25 through 650,” he posted on X.

The 38-year-old Santana knows that age makes him prone to injuries and wear and tear over the long season.
He knows his body and is willing to train hard, though.
Being in top physical conditions ensures that he will be heavily considered to make the lineup every day, thus getting him closer to those bonuses.
The Guards made sure to bring in someone who could contribute a similar output as the departing Naylor.
Naylor was the better hitter this past season, with more homers and a higher wRC+ (118 to Santana’s 114).
But Santana sure made it very close thanks to his willingness to walk, something that Naylor isn’t very good at.
Additionally, Santana’s superior defense made him the better player, beating Naylor 3.0 to 2.3 in fWAR.
You can be sure Santana will be highly motivated to play a lot and have a chance at that extra $1.2 million.
He will go back to playing for a highly competitive team, fighting for glory in familiar surroundings.
