Whenever a legendary player starts to show even a hint of age and decline, thoughts turn to who might someday take his place. Although Jose Ramirez has plenty of time left with the Cleveland Guardians, with a lengthy contract extension secured, that isn’t stopping fans and analysts from looking ahead.
That is because young infielder Welbyn Francisca is showing signs that he could be a worthy successor to the franchise icon. It is hard to ignore that Francisca is also a well-rounded switch-hitter from the Dominican Republic.
That is why the 20-year-old Guardians prospect is being compared to Ramirez, with thoughts that he could become Cleveland’s 2.0 version in the years ahead.

Francisca was signed by Cleveland for $1.375 million in 2023 as an international free agent. At the time, Ramirez posed for a picture with the 16-year-old, not knowing how his future was going to work out.
Now 20 years old, Francisca earned three minor-league promotions during the 2026 season, winding up with five games at Double-A Akron. In 79 games climbing through Rookie League and Single-A, he had a slash line of .272/.366/.513 with 81 hits, 19 home runs, 53 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases.
More recently, in 15 Arizona Fall League games, Francisca has a slash line of .420/.488/.710 with 29 hits, four home runs, 28 RBIs, and six stolen bases. He has been named to the Fall Stars Game and has Surprise tied for first place with a 15-10 record and five regular-season games to go.
Ramirez turned 34 years old in September, which was near the end of his worst offensive season in more than a decade. Diminished by a hamate injury that required surgery, he finished with a .235/.320/.368 slash line that was his worst across the board since 2015. After back-to-back seasons of 39 and 30 home runs, respectively, he had 12 in 125 games before adding two crucial homers in the ALDS.
This changing of the guard may be years away, if it happens at all, but it will be worth watching Francisca’s progress over the next few years all the same.
