The Cleveland Guardians and the Chicago White Sox will kick off the American League Division Series on Saturday. The winner will advance to the League Championship Series to play whoever comes out alive of the New York Yankees – Tampa Bay Rays matchup.
To say that the White Sox and Guardians were competing all year would be an understatement. The fight for the AL Central was very much alive until the last weekend of the regular season, when Cleveland secured its third consecutive division crown. The underrated, young, and exciting White Sox, however, made it very difficult.
The two squads were very much evenly matched all year. Cleveland took the division with a mere one-game gap ahead of their Division Series foes, but there’s more.
This graph shows how close the two organizations were this year in many statistical departments and realities.

The White Sox took the season series 7-6, which is why a tie at the top would have shockingly given them the AL Central. The two teams played 13 games, with one squad winning seven and the other, Cleveland, closely behind at six. The difference was, again, just one game.
In those 13 games, Chicago scored 58 runs, just one more than the Guardians’ 57. Again, evenly matched. But that’s not all: the White Sox also had just one more homer.
The OPS and ERA departments did favor Chicago by a significant margin, but it’s also important to clarify that these Guardians, the ones who will take the field on Saturday, are a much better team than they were in the first half, especially on offense.
These numbers and stats are very fun and even useful to understand how close and evenly matched these squads have been virtually all year. However, none of this will matter on Saturday and during the rest of the series, and both teams know it.
Each player and each organization will be trying to write their own history starting on Saturday. From this point forward, every game is a must-win affair. There will be no speculation and no tomorrow. The time, more than ever before, is now.
