Friday was a good day for the Cleveland Guardians. They won not one, but two close games via walk-off, and shortstop Brayan Rocchio was all over the afternoon clash.
The infielder, who was struggling badly leading up to the game, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a whopping five RBI. He hit two homers: one was a game-tying grand slam, and the other was a walk-off solo shot. Not bad for a day’s work, huh?
Even with his recent slump (before Friday, at least), Rocchio is enjoying his best campaign as a major leaguer, with a career-best 92 wRC+ and 3.1 fWAR. He might look completely unproductive at times, but it’s not because of a lack of work.
Rocchio is among the hardest-working players on the Guardians roster, and when he’s not hitting, he’s at least contributing a very steady glove. When he’s on at the plate, however, he changes the entire picture for the team and gives it another weapon for the bottom of the lineup.
His teammates love him and are quick to point out his qualities. Reliever Slade Cecconi, for example, praised Rocchio’s mental toughness and how prepared he is for moments like Friday’s.
“I think he’s just got the gene, man. Ever since I’ve been here, it’s like every time. It’s unbelievable what he’s able to do. I also know he does so much mental prep work. I see him with his headphones on; he does all sorts of stuff to prepare his mind, and when you take care of that, those big situations are just, you know, more intense focus for a guy that’s prepared,” Cecconi said, per Mason Horodyski of News 5 Cleveland.

That’s right: Rocchio’s got the gene. He is a known postseason producer, with a 153 wRC+ in 13 October games. He hit a walk-off home run in late September on the same day they clinched their second straight division title last year, and he has countless key hits in crunch time.
For a hitter without an impressive overall offensive profile, Rocchio sure has his fair share of big moments. Per Cecconi, it all starts with his mind.
Despite being prone to having long stretches of mediocre offensive play, Rocchio is tied with Chase DeLauter for the team lead in fWAR among position players with 3.1. Not bad for a career 82 wRC+ hitter.
