Guardians Offense Goes Silent in Ugly Loss To Padres

The good feeling from Saturday night did not carry over. One day after riding a combined one-hitter to a milestone win, the Cleveland Guardians found themselves on the wrong end of a shutout Sunday, falling 5-0 to the Padres in a game where the offense never found any rhythm at all.

Tanner Bibee took the loss despite battling through six innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while walking three and striking out three. San Diego tacked on single runs in the fourth, eighth and ninth innings to pad the lead, while the Cleveland bullpen of Matt Festa, Tim Herrin, Logan Allen and Cade Smith did their part to keep the deficit from growing further out of hand. It simply did not matter with the way the lineup performed.

Cleveland managed only three hits in the entire game. Jose Ramirez accounted for two of them, going 2-3, and Nathaniel Lowe added the third. Every other spot in the order came up empty, including Steven Kwan, who went 0-4 out of the leadoff spot after his big night against these same Padres just one day earlier. The Guardians fell to 60 and 65 on the season with the loss.

Afterward, the team’s social media account summed up the day with a simple, blunt message as the club prepared to head into a scheduled break in the schedule.

There was not much else to say about a game this lopsided. The same offense that had shown flashes of life over the weekend, driving in runs and stringing together at bats against a hot San Diego pitching staff, reverted right back to the version that has plagued this team for weeks.

The timing of the off day could not be better for a club that needs to regroup mentally as much as physically. With roughly forty games remaining and the AL Central and wild card picture still muddled enough to reward a hot week, Cleveland cannot afford many more performances like Sunday’s. The Guardians will use the extra day to reset before returning to a schedule where every result now carries added weight.
