Guardians Quietly Hit A Massive Franchise Milestone Saturday

The Cleveland Guardians fought for a much-needed win on Saturday as they evened their series with the San Diego Padres by a score of 6-1. Joey Cantillo twirled a gem and combined with the bullpen to record a one-hit shutout with the only single coming from the second batter of the game.

Cleveland had been 8-18 since the break but was able to keep pace with the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central with Saturday’s victory. Each win at this point in the season is crucial with the Guardians fighting for their playoff lives, but even though it may not have felt like it was super impactful in the moment, Saturday’s win was actually a huge milestone in franchise history.

MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins shared that the win over the Padres was the historic 10,000th win in Guardians history. It only took 19,590 games to get there and Cleveland is now the twelfth franchise overall with 10,000 wins.

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are the only two other teams established after 1900 to have reached 10,000+ wins, so the Guardians are in good company. The next milestone this organization needs to hit is to catch those franchises in World Series wins, but that could take a while.

It is well documented that the Guardians have baseball’s longest current World Series drought at 77 years. That drought is tied for the fourth-longest of all-time behind only the Red Sox (85 years), White Sox (87 years), and Chicago Cubs (107 years) and the clock is ticking for them to capitalize on this current window and avoid catching Boston.

The Guardians are going to need at least 25-30 more wins to three-peat as AL Central champions, and hopefully the offense can start turning things around to make that a possibility. Cantillo and the rotation have been doing their jobs, but scoring six runs has been a tall order of late and it would be encouraging if the bats can repeat that performance again on Sunday to take this series.
