For months leading into the season, the common consensus was that the AL Central division was the weakest in baseball.
Considering the results of the last couple of seasons, it was hard to argue with that.
Teams change and evolve, though, and the reality seems to be a bit different in 2024.
The AL Central seems much more competitive despite having arguably the worst team in baseball, the Chicago White Sox.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt recognizes this shift, and discussed it after taking the first game of the series against the Detroit Tigers with a 2-1 score on Monday.
“‘The teams in our division are much better than what the media covered.’ @CLEGuardians manager Stephen Vogt understands that competing for the top spot in the AL Central Division is much more difficult than some are giving it credit for in the media,” Bally Sports Cleveland tweeted with the skipper’s quotes.

The Guardians lead the division as of Tuesday afternoon, with a 23-12 record.
The surging Minnesota Twins are second, 2.5 games behind Cleveland, with a 20-14 record.
The Kansas City Royals are third at 21-15, and the Tigers are fourth at 18-17.
Only the White Sox, at 8-27 with a -88 run differential, haven’t been competitive.
The rest of the squads are all over .500 and fighting for a chance to make the postseason.
It might have been the case in the past, but the AL Central is no longer the laughingstock of MLB.
It’s important that more voices like Vogt speak about this renewed reality.
There is a long way to go, sure, and some of these teams might eventually collapse, but the fact is that the division is much better than anticipated and four of the five teams want to compete.
