What looked like a promising weekend for the Cleveland Guardians ended up being a series tie with the Chicago White Sox. That means the latter are, for now at least, the AL Central leaders by one game.
The Guardians, however, showed enough this weekend to suggest they will be competitive, even though they don’t currently have their best player, Jose Ramirez. Despite running one of the lowest payrolls in the league, a talented but shallow rotation, and some key injuries, Cleveland put on an impressive display of heart, will, and grit.
“The first 2 games, to have a walk-off home run. This was a towering moonshot that hit the foul pole. I don’t know what’s more entertaining than a towering moonshot in a walkoff win, it was Rocchio. Everybody loves Rocchio. Then the next night with Khalil Watson, I know they lost the last 2 of the series, we’re still a game behind, but hell, it was fun,” analyst Ken Carman said.

The Guardians took Game 1 of the series on Thursday thanks to Rocchio’s blast. They showed power and resilience all along.
Then, they walked things off again in Game 2 on Friday thanks to the contributions of a rookie, Khalil Watson. He has developed into one of the most important players on the roster in the last couple of weeks and came through when it mattered most.
Then, they lost two games on Saturday and Sunday by a combined three runs. They were always in the thick of things, and those two slipped away due to different circumstances. The Guardians were competitive in both, though.
This team has managed to fight through adversity for weeks now. They lost three key regulars on June 13: Ramirez, Chase DeLauter, and Angel Martinez. Only DeLauter has returned.
If Cleveland wants to win the division or qualify for the postseason, it will have to keep fighting. The team has a never-surrender attitude and mindset, and that’s helping them accumulate wins.
Now, if they want to increase their ceiling and compete for the ultimate prize, they need to take a long look at the trade market and bring in at least a couple of reinforcements. In any case, this team won’t go down without a fight.
