Any walk-off homer that puts a team in a tie for first place, even at this stage of the season, is bound to generate excitement. When it comes from an unexpected source, it adds even more to the drama.
On Thursday, the Cleveland Guardians earned arguably their most important win of the season when they rallied to defeat the Chicago White Sox at Progressive Field. The game ended when shortstop Brayan Rocchio connected on a two-run homer for a 6-5 victory.
It was Rocchio’s sixth home run in 85 games this season, and his first in almost a month. It was just the 19th of his career in almost 1,100 MLB at-bats.
Analyst Adam Gerstenhaber reacted to the Guardians’ big win against the White Sox, specifically praising Rocchio’s heroics.
“Rocchio destroys a baseball, and I think that ball is still going. He crushed that ball. Rocchio was the story of the game,” Gerstenhaber said.

Rocchio has arguably been the story of the entire season for the Guardians. The infielder opened the campaign as Cleveland’s starting second baseman, but he was moved to shortstop in early April when Gabriel Arias went on the injured list.
For most of the year, Rocchio batted ninth in the order, which was befitting of his previous career offensive performance. In two full seasons, his best batting average of .233 and OPS of .630 were posted last year. This year, those numbers are at .269 and .733, respectively.
With injuries to Jose Ramirez, Chase DeLauter, and Angel Martinez, Rocchio was moved up in the order. For the season, he leads the team in at-bats and hits, is tied for the lead in total bases, and is second in runs scored and RBIs.
There is an outside chance that Rocchio will hear his name called when the AL All-Star team is announced on Saturday. It would be quite an accomplishment for someone who may not have been in the organization’s long-term plans before the season began.
Rocchio should be recognized for responding to that challenge with a breakout year, which he now has to maintain over what promises to be a challenging second half.
