The Cleveland Guardians are likely already making plans on how they will approach the upcoming MLB trade deadline. With their status as a legitimate playoff contender and likely to earn a postseason berth, the Guardians would be looking to add players before the Aug. 3 cutoff.
As such, they have to determine which players they would be willing to part with to make a deal. Fortunately, the Guardians’ system is loaded with talented prospects. Some of them may have more value as trade pieces rather than potential major leaguers in Cleveland, based on various circumstances.
With that in mind, MLB.com insider Tim Stebbins has named infield prospect Angel Genao as the Guardians’ best trade chip in 2026.
“Genao does not have a clear path to the majors right now, which could make him a trade chip if the AL Central-leading Guardians want to make a big move at the deadline. He’s a natural shortstop with experience playing second and third base. But the Guardians’ infield includes shortstop Brayan Rocchio (who’s having a breakout season), second baseman Travis Bazzana (who has shined in his rookie campaign) and superstar third baseman Jose Ramirez,” Stebbins wrote.
Genao is currently ranked as the Guardians’ No. 1 overall prospect by MLB.com, so using him in a trade would be significant, but it also could bring a return that could help the team get to the World Series for the first time since 2016. If the organization believes his path to playing time in the majors is truly blocked, this might be the best way to get the most out of his enormous potential.
After playing for the Dominican Republic in the 2017 Little League World Series, Genao signed with Cleveland as an international free agent in 2021. Since then, he has steadily climbed through the Guardians’ talented farm system, including a slash line of .330/.379/.499 in 110 games in 2024.
Last year, he was limited to 77 games at Double-A by a shoulder injury. He was promoted to Triple-A during this season and has a .248/.302/.448 slash line with four home runs in 29 games for Columbus.
The Guardians may want to be cautious in potentially trading Genao. Even though Rocchio has been one of their best hitters this season, his .280 average and .766 OPS are well above his previous career highs, so there have to be some legitimate questions about keeping that up for the long haul.
However, if parting with Genao is the difference between potentially winning a long-awaited championship and not, the Guardians may have to make that move.
