On Saturday, the Cleveland Guardians got nothing but bad news. They lost to the Boston Red Sox by a wide margin and also reported an injury to one of their most important players.
Outfielder Angel Martinez had to leave the game in the fifth inning with inflammation in his left foot. He had to be replaced by Stuart Fairchild.
According to multiple sources in the stadium, Martinez is now set to undergo an MRI. The entire Guardians nation is hoping for the best, because he has been huge for the team this year.
“Martínez is going to get an MRI, Stephen Vogt said. First came up a few games ago and was able to play through it. Aggravated it on a play today,” team insider Tim Stebbins said.

Vogt said after the game that they will have more information later on Sunday after the results of the MRI and probably before taking the field against Boston.
“We took him out as a precaution,” the skipper said, and that bodes well for his overall outlook. Still, the MRI will determine how much time he will miss.

The exact date on which the versatile utilityman initially injured his left foot is unknown at this point. The team and fans are hoping it’s nothing major.
Martinez was 0-for-2 with two strikeouts before being taken out of the game. For the season, he’s slashing .243/.281/.449 with nine home runs, eight stolen bases, and a 103 wRC+.
He has been scuffling a bit in May, with an 88 wRC+ before Saturday’s game after posting a 122 mark in the first month of the season. Despite the mini slump and the ugly plate discipline numbers (he has just six walks against 41 strikeouts) in the year as a whole, his breakthrough has been a welcome development for the Guardians and has fueled some of their wins.
The on-base ability is not ideal, but he has power, speed, the ability to hit from both sides of the plate, and defensive versatility, not to mention a strong and accurate arm.
There’s a chance he might need a stint on the injured list. Expect the team to be cautious while handling any potential injury, because he has already aggravated the issue and they don’t want to push their luck.
