The Cleveland Guardians had been rolling of late but got walloped by the Boston Red Sox 9-1 on Saturday thanks to a huge ninth inning that saw the Sox hang six runs on the board to put the game out of reach. Tanner Bibee takes the ball on Sunday seeking his first victory of the year and will do his best to help Cleveland win this series before it heads east to begin a series with the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
Saturday’s loss also featured an unfortunate development, as outfielder Angel Martinez left the game in the sixth inning and was replaced by Stuart Fairchild, who made his Guardians debut. Initial reports indicated that Martinez left the game with a foot injury.
Cleveland.com’s Paul Hoynes talked about the injury after the game and pointed out that Martinez left the game with left foot inflammation.
“G’s Angel Martinez left Saturday’s game with inflammation of the left foot. He started the game in left field and was replaced in the fifth by Stuart Fairchild,” tweeted Hoynes.

Martinez had been dealing with the injury for a few days and played through it, and obviously on Saturday things became too much for him to deal with. Stephen Vogt said after the game that he’ll be getting an MRI right away to determine the severity, so there’s no word just yet on how much time he’ll miss, if any.
It’s not an encouraging development for a young talent who has taken such a seismic leap forward this year both at the plate and in the field. This also couldn’t come at a worse time with Steven Kwan away from the team on bereavement leave.
It’s fair to assume Martinez will take Sunday off with Monday being an off day, and hopefully the team gets some good news and he’ll be ready to go in New York. He has become an indispensable part of this team, and the Guardians can’t afford to lose another lineup staple right in the middle of this hot streak.
