The Cleveland Guardians made a surprising early-season trade on Saturday when they traded the 29th overall pick in the upcoming draft and left-handed pitching prospect Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson to the San Francisco Giants for two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey. The move made sense given Bo Naylor’s struggles, but it’s still rare to see a deal this substantial happen in early May.
Bailey now becomes the next line of stellar defensive catchers to don a Guardians uniform and will make quite the tandem with Austin Hedges, whose bat has gone up a level thus far in 2026. We’re all still processing the move, and it sounds like Bailey is as well.
Mason Horodyski of WEWS shared a clip from Bailey’s introductory presser where he talked about his surprise of being traded. He mentioned the writing may have already been on the wall but he is ready to go for the Guards.
“A little bit surprised, but at the same time, you kind of see the writing on the wall a little bit there with my time. I’m just excited to probably get the game going and just go out there and play. Have some fun,” said Bailey.

The one issue is that as abysmal as Naylor has been at the plate this season, Bailey has actually been worse with just a minuscule .396 OPS. It will be concerning if Bailey can’t at least get his OPS back over .600 where it has typically been over the course of his career, but even if he doesn’t start hitting, he’d be far from the first Guardians catcher to struggle at the plate.
This organization clearly prioritizes defense behind the plate and views the offense that catcher provides as a bonus. This has been the case for years, and there is arguably nobody better defensively than Bailey at the moment.
It’s a rough turn of events for Naylor, who was sent down to Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move. Bailey is also just 26, so there’s not a clear path back to relevancy for Naylor, who has also likely been surpassed by prospect Cooper Ingle, who might not need much more time to develop.
This is an aggressive move this early in the season, but Bailey is an exciting talent who should fit right in. What it means for the bigger picture at catcher remains to be seen, but he is an immediate upgrade who should make his impact felt in many ways right away.
