The Cleveland Guardians’ offense had another rough day at the office on Tuesday, which has become a common occurrence in recent games. In Travis Bazzana’s MLB debut, they couldn’t handle the Tampa Bay Rays’ pitching staff for a second consecutive day.
Nick Martinez and the Rays’ bullpen shut down Bazzana and the rest of the Guardians’ lineup in the 1-0 loss at Progressive Field. It’s Cleveland’s fourth straight defeat, and they have scored a total of seven runs over that stretch, fewer than two per game. They are now under .500, at 15-16.
Martinez dominated Cleveland hitters for seven innings, in which he conceded four hits and walked just one, with four strikeouts. In contrast, Guardians starter Tanner Bibee wasn’t efficient and left the game after reaching 93 pitches, but he was able to complete five frames in which he surrendered a single run on four hits and three walks, fanning six foes. He was saddled with the loss.
The lone run of the night came in the fifth inning, when Jonathan Aranda plated Taylor Walls with a single off Bibee.

The Guardians had a wonderful chance at least to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth, but Chase DeLauter struck out swinging with the bases loaded and one out, and Jose Ramirez flied out to center field to end the inning. They also left two men on in the ninth.
Bazzana went 0-for-2 with two walks and a strikeout in his debut, batting seventh and playing second base. Only Steven Kwan, DeLauter, Daniel Schneemann, and Angel Martinez logged hits in another dreadful offensive performance.
At least the Guardians’ bullpen was able to keep the team in the game in this one, with Tim Herrin, Connor Brogdon, and Peyton Pallette notching scoreless outings.
Cleveland’s offensive issues, however, are starting to become quite concerning. That’s, in part, why the organization wanted to call up Bazzana, to get an upgrade over Juan Brito. Still, many hitters are slumping at the moment.
The two teams will close out the series on Wednesday at the same venue. The play ball voice will come at 1:10 pm ET, with Gavin Williams facing Drew Rasmussen. Cleveland will try to avoid a sweep.
