The Cleveland Guardians were very much counting on improvement from their returning players to give their offense the boost it needed after not adding any significant hitters this offseason. It was primarily expected to come from Bo Naylor and Kyle Manzardo, who were coming off very productive ends to last season.
However, that has not been the case, as the catcher and first baseman each have a batting average under .200 and have combined for two home runs and nine RBIs with the end of April approaching. Instead, infielder Brayan Rocchio has been one of Cleveland’s surprise offensive players.
The Guardians shortstop is emerging as a constant force at the plate, despite being the No. 9 hitter in the lineup.
“It is hard not to be impressed with the growth Brayan Rocchio has had both defensively and at the plate. He has become a constant presence on the diamond for the Guardians,” Cade Cracas posted on X.

Rocchio has fashioned his breakout offensive performance while also switching defensive positions. The Opening Day second baseman, Rocchio, moved to shortstop when Gabriel Arias was put on the injured list on April 7.
Playing 28 of Cleveland’s 29 games so far this season, Rocchio has a slash line of .278/.363/.411, with a team-leading 25 hits. His OPS of .774 is well above his career mark of around .600 from his first three seasons.
Most impressively, Rocchio leads the team with 17 RBIs, despite all but eight of his 90 at-bats coming from the No. 9 spot in the order. He has a .435 batting average with runners in scoring position, and is hitting .389 with runners on base.
Rocchio has also scored 11 runs, which is tied for fourth on the team, one run behind three players in second place. His performance has allowed the Guardians to keep top prospect Travis Bazzana in the minors, for now, while also overcoming the poor performance of rookie Juan Brito after a strong start when he was called up to fill Arias’ roster spot.
At 25 years old, Rocchio is at the age where a breakout such as this was possible, and if he can sustain it, he could prove to be one of the most important Guardians players over the course of the entire 2026 season.
