The excitement is building in the Cleveland Guardians camp largely due to a handful of young prospects who are slated to carve out major roles for themselves ahead of Opening Day. After having arguably the league’s worst outfield last season in terms of offensive production, Chase DeLauter, CJ Kayfus, and George Valera are all projected to make the team and potentially start to provide some much-needed pop and fix those issues.
That’s all great, but many have forgotten about Angel Martinez, who played in 139 games last season, mostly in center field. He was a big reason for the lack of offensive firepower as evidenced by his .224/.269/.359 batting line with 11 homers and 45 RBIs. Despite the quiet season and influx of competition, Martinez doesn’t sound discouraged.
Cleveland.com’s Paul Hoynes recently wrote a piece on him and included some quotes from Martinez about how he feels last year went well and how he is going to grow in 2026.
“I think last year was really good,” said Martinez. “I know the numbers don’t really show what they’re supposed to show, but I grew a lot and feel like this year is going to be way, way better.”
There is a lot of dust to be settled when it comes to the outfield, even with All-Star left fielder Steven Kwan, who could be taking on a slightly different role this season. Where Martinez fits into the picture is unclear, but he just turned 24, and all he has to do is put his head down and keep working.
The rookies are exciting, but they are far from a sure thing, especially DeLauter, who hasn’t played a fully healthy season since joining the organization. The other tough aspect is that DeLauter, Kayfus, and Valera are all lefties, and the main thing Martinez has going for him is that, despite his poor offensive showing last year, he had exaggerated splits.
Martinez had a .792 OPS against lefties as opposed to just a .545 OPS against righties, so that could be his best path to holding onto regular playing time.
Even though his role is unclear, he is still just 24 and a valuable member of this team’s future.
