The Cleveland Guardians are about to enter spring training with little competition for roster spots. Barring injury, or a long-rumored trade, they seem to have a clear picture of what their team will look like.
Notably, it includes multiple top prospects at key positions, with two of them in line to make their regular-season MLB debuts. It may not be the safest path for a team that hopes to continue a recent stretch of dominance and win the AL Central for a third straight season, but it could also pay off in a big way.
With that in mind, analyst Joel Reuter is predicting the Guardians’ 2026 Opening Day lineup, and he is expressing a bit of concern over its “lack of experience.”
“LF Steven Kwan, RF George Valera, 3B Jose Ramirez, 1B Kyle Manzardo, CF Chase DeLauter (R), 2B Travis Bazzana (R), DH C.J. Kayfus, C Bo Naylor, SS Gabriel Arias,” Reuter wrote. “Ideally, the Guardians would not enter camp relying on Chase DeLauter, C.J. Kayfus and George Valera to all handle starting jobs given their lack of experience, but their penny pinching means a significant focus on in-house contributions. Can Travis Bazzana make a play for an Opening Day roster spot while also suiting up for Team Australia in the World Baseball Classic?”
Kayfus and Valera were called up from the minors late last season and helped the Guardians overcome a historic deficit to win the division. Then, DeLauter was promoted and became one of the few players in history to make his MLB debut in a postseason game.
Add to the mix Bazzana, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft who has had his major league arrival delayed by injuries. It will be interesting to see if his intention to play for Australia in the WBC, and the time he will miss with the Guardians because of it, will have an impact on his potential debut.
Kwan will remain a fixture at the top of the order, at least for the time being. There remains a chance he will be traded away as he and the Guardians remain unable to agree on a contract extension that will secure his long-term future with the team.
Cleveland no longer has any similar concern about Ramirez, their franchise cornerstone and perennial AL MVP contender who recently got a seven-year contract extension of his own. That will allow camp to open with some good vibes among his teammates.
Overall, the Guardians should remain in contention for an AL playoff berth, and if those young players perform up to expectations, bigger things may be possible.
