The Cleveland Guardians made history in winning the AL Central last season, rallying from far behind in the standings. To do something like that, a team has to perform at its best when it matters most.
That means making sure to lock down games in the late innings. That’s especially necessary when you’re not able to build an early lead and ride it out for an easy win.
Pitch Profiler recently showed each MLB team’s win percentage by inning last season. It revealed who was able to build a lead and hold it, or who found a way to win late.
Those stats show how clutch the Guardians were in 2025.
“Teams like the Yankees, Tigers, Cubs, and Brewers do their winning in the early innings. The Jays, Guardians, Mariners, Astros, Red Sox, Phillies, Dodgers, etc. prefer to do their winning later in the game,” Pitch Profiler posted on X.

Cleveland’s graph shows that the Guardians were in almost every game throughout, with their win percentage hovering around the 50 percent mark most of the time. They were never really out of it, but they also didn’t have the upper hand, either.
However, from the seventh inning on, their win percentage surged. It reached its peak in the ninth inning, which is the best-case scenario.
Every single win the Guardians earned was needed last season. After a disappointing start that cratered with a terrible month of June, Cleveland was as many as 15.5 games behind in the division.
The Guardians also were 11 games out at one point in September, but they were able to overtake the Detroit Tigers in the final days of the season. It was the biggest deficit ever overcome to win an MLB division.
Ideally, the Guardians will avoid a similar scenario and make things easier for themselves in 2026, both in individual games and in the season overall.
