The Cleveland Guardians have plenty of talent in their farm system right now. They also have a big need for strong bats.
That’s why, after watching him become just the sixth player in MLB history to make his debut during the playoffs, it’s only logical to believe that Chase DeLauter will also take the field to start the upcoming campaign. Clearly, Stephen Vogt and the team believe in his ability to get things done at the plate.
With that in mind, team analyst Tim Stebbins chose him as one of the most likely candidates to make the team’s Opening Day Roster next season:
“To that end, the Guardians will naturally be mindful of DeLauter’s workload in camp. But provided he’s healthy, given his skill set, he appears to have a great opportunity to make the Opening Day roster. And perhaps the next time he takes his position in the outfield at Progressive Field, DeLauter will be reminded of Oct. 1, 2025. He spoke that day of the warm reception he received from fans and how helpful it was for him when he debuted,” Stebbins wrote.
DeLauter’s talents and physical tools have never been doubted. He’s one of the most talented and promising young sluggers in the game right now.
That being said, he does have a worrisome history of injuries, and that should continue to be a concern for a while. Until he proves he can stay healthy for the long run, the Guardians will have no choice but to err on the side of caution with him.
Lefty sluggers with those physical tools don’t grow in trees. DeLauter has the potential to be not only the face of the franchise but also one of the best players in baseball in no time. Hopefully, injuries won’t stand in the way of his development.
With a clear path to take the field next season and the team’s major need for help at the plate, he could be a strong candidate for AL Rookie of the Year.
