The Cleveland Guardians have faced criticism for their inability to finalize a contract extension with Steven Kwan.
However, another player on the roster deserves equal consideration as the front office navigates trade rumors and roster decisions.
The focus should shift toward the pitching staff, where stability could prove just as valuable heading into 2026.
Beat reporter Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com recently suggested that the Guardians prioritize locking up right-hander Cade Smith with a multiyear extension this winter.
“Maybe at the top of the list, right behind Kwan is Cade Smith. That’s a guy they should pursue a multiyear deal with. He’s shown he can pitch in a lot of different situations. This year he stepped in as closer,” Hoynes said.
Smith was thrust into the closer role after Emmanuel Clase was placed on paid leave during MLB’s sports betting investigation.
Following a difficult debut against the Rockies, Smith posted a 2.51 ERA over 28 2/3 innings while filling the void at the back end of the bullpen.
His performance eliminated any concerns about whether he could handle high-leverage situations.
Before Clase’s suspension, the Guardians appeared to have discovered a cost-efficient approach by using Smith as a setup man.
That strategy avoided the salary increases tied to save totals during arbitration.
Smith has now accumulated 16 saves alongside a 2.42 ERA across 149 innings, establishing himself as a legitimate option to close games in 2026.
The front office has an opportunity to extend Smith before his arbitration value rises further.
A deal covering his arbitration years would likely exceed Emmanuel Clase’s $20 million contract, but a structure around three years and $25 million could provide long-term security for both sides while keeping a key arm in Cleveland.
