The Cleveland Guardians turned to Chase DeLauter in their moment of desperation, and the 23-year-old outfielder delivered when it mattered most.
DeLauter made his major league debut in Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series at Progressive Field, stepping into an elimination game with Cleveland’s season hanging in the balance.
The Guardians needed a spark after dropping the opener, and manager Stephen Vogt inserted the rookie into the lineup against Detroit’s Casey Mize.
Speaking with reporters after Cleveland’s victory, DeLauter reflected on the emotional roller coaster of his first MLB appearance.
“Unreal feeling. From going home this weekend to being on the taxi squad, to being active, to being in the lineup, just unreal emotions the last couple days. And then we come out here and get a win and get to keep playing ball, so on to tomorrow,” DeLauter said.

His path to this moment had been anything but smooth, marked by a hamate fracture that required surgery in July and limited him to just 138 minor league games across his career.
The left-handed hitter sat out Game 1 against Detroit’s Tarik Skubal but got his opportunity facing the right-handed Mize.
DeLauter’s minor league numbers justified the decision, posting an .859 OPS in 34 Triple-A games this season and .888 across his entire career.
His combination of plate discipline and power made him an intriguing option for a Cleveland offense searching for production.
Cleveland’s willingness to trust young players in critical moments continues a recent pattern.
George Valera earned a promotion weeks earlier and became the regular number two hitter during the Guardians’ September division title push.
That same confidence now extends to DeLauter as Cleveland fights to extend their postseason run.
