The Cleveland Guardians got a much-needed bounce-back game from Gavin Williams.
They needed a win after dropping three in a row to the Atlanta Braves.
Williams wasn’t at his best in his previous outing, but he gave the team what it needed in the series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The righty pitched 5.1 innings, giving up four hits with one walk and striking out five. It was his fifth scoreless outing of the season.

Williams has been dominant against lefty hitters, so facing the Diamondbacks’ lefty-heavy offense was just what the doctor ordered.
He has limited lefty hitters to a .142 batting average (34-for-239) this season.
That’s a lower batting average than what Zac Gallen allowed in 2022 (.146) and the legendary Pedro Martinez in 2000 (.150), according to MLB.com.
Williams has been on a roll since the All-Star break, holding the opposition to a .178 batting average in six starts, and almost pitched a no-hitter against the New York Mets two starts back.
More importantly, he’s limiting walks, which was the main issue with his game earlier in his career.
The Guardians are three games behind in the AL Wild Card race with 38 games to go and one of the easiest schedules in baseball.
They will need the rotation to keep this momentum going, and hopefully, Williams will continue his hot stretch until the end of the season.
