The Cleveland Guardians could use some more help on the mound right now.
John Means is expected to return at some point as he’s making strides in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
With Joey Cantillo optioned to Triple-A Columbus, perhaps there could be a way back for Triston McKenzie.
Asked about that, Stephen Osterer, Cleveland’s vice president of player development, had a positive update about the right-hander.
“It’s been a long road for Triston,” Osterer said. “In a lot of ways, it did challenge Triston, but he’s come out in a pretty good spot right now. We’re excited to see what he can do for the next few weeks.”
McKenzie was projected to be one of the next stars for Cleveland.
Not so long ago, he was second behind only Shane Bieber in the rotation.
But the 28-year-old struggled in limited action this season, making just four appearances before being designated for assignment.
He’s spent the past four months in the Arizona Complex League, but he finally made his way back to Triple-A.
McKenzie gave up one unearned run and issued two walks in one inning, so while control and command issues continue to be a concern, it was refreshing to watch his fastball sitting in the 93-96 mph range.
He reportedly will continue to work out of the bullpen, and because he can become a minor league free agent at the end of the season, he should have more than enough motivation to be at his best.
McKenzie has one of the most electric arms in the game.
Hopefully, he’ll get back on track.
