The Cleveland Guardians have some big decisions to make.
The trade deadline is exactly one week away.
With that in mind, ESPN insider Jeff Passan pointed to the three potential trade candidates this team could look to move on from:
“If Cleveland senses the opportunity for value, it will jump. If not, its impending free agents — Carlos Santana, Paul Sewald, Jakob Junis — will be the focus,” Passan wrote.
Of course, it’s not like they won’t have a use for any of them, but it would make more sense to get something in return for their services if neither of them is a part of their long-term plans.
They could look to bring back fan favorite Carlos Santana for another year in free agency, and he’s not likely to draw that much value in return at this point in his career.
But if a desperate team comes knocking with a suitable offer, they will just have to pull the trigger.
Now, when it comes to adding more talent, it might be an entirely different story.
The Guardians haven’t been known for their aggressive approach to the offseason or the trade deadline, and this season isn’t likely to be the exception to that rule.
This team is playing the best baseball of the season, and they still have a big chance to make the playoffs if they keep the momentum going.
They will most likely have to do so with their current core of players, as barring a shocking turn of events, they won’t give up valuable assets in any trade.
At least, getting hot at this point in the season may have been just enough for the front office to hold onto their core players.
