The Cleveland Guardians are showing signs of life.
As such, they may no longer consider parting ways with some of their players.
Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean everybody else isn’t going to try.
With that in mind, MLB analyst Jim Bowden pointed out that the New York Yankees could be keeping tabs on star reliever Cade Smith:
“They could go to the Guardians and go get Cade Smith for the back of the bullpen and add another high-leverage reliever,” Bowden said. “I think the ideal deadline for [the Yankees] would be [Mitch] Keller, Cade Smith, and Eugenio Suarez.”
Smith is one of the most promising bullpen arms in the league, and he could be a stellar closer.
The Guardians aren’t reportedly interested in moving on from him, knowing that they have an elite one-two punch with him and Emmanuel Clase.
If anything, rumors about Clase being on the move also made sense because the Guardians know they have a star closer in the making in Smith.
Even so, we’ve seen how quickly things can change in this line of business, and the Yankees tend to be quite aggressive once they’ve set their sights on a player.
Depending on what they’re willing to give up, perhaps this team might reconsider its stance on Smith.
The Yankees have struggled to close out games this season, with former Milwaukee Brewers star Devin Williams looking like a shell of himself since he arrived in The Big Apple.
The Guardians, on the other hand, are looking to close out the season on a high note and return to the postseason after an up-and-down campaign.
Cade Smith could play a crucial role in that, and given his contract, there aren’t many incentives to part ways with him.
