Jose Ramirez is more than just a player for the Cleveland Guardians. He is more than some numbers and stats you can look at on a screen.
His impact on the franchise can’t possibly be measured, at least not accurately. He is the idol, the living legend, the role model for the young kid who goes to the game with his dad at Progressive Field. He is the one the younger fans look at and say, ‘I want to be like him.’
He is someone who has given his heart and soul for the organization for a long time. Ramirez represents the ones who are not willing to let people tell them they are too short, too small, or too unathletic to realize their dreams.
That’s why losing him is so painful for the Guardians. On Saturday, the talented third baseman had to leave the game against the Detroit Tigers and was later diagnosed with a broken left hamate bone.
Nick Wilson and Jonathan Peterlin tried to explain what J-Ram means to the team and the organization, and agreed on the fact that replacing him, or at least replicating what he contributes, will be very difficult.
“I am curious to see how the Guardians respond. He just matters so much. He matters so much in more than just hitting. Think about the other things J-Ram does. He does so much to impact a game beyond just whether or not he can hit a ball over a fence,” Peterlin said.

They also named leadership, defense, and baserunning as areas in which the Guardians could, and will, miss Ramirez for as long as he’s out.
In 2019, he suffered the same injury, only in his right wrist. He came back in about a month, so fans are hoping he can beat the odds again and return quickly to help this team get into the postseason again.
Experts indicate that the injury requires between one and two months, depending on many factors, and that Ramirez’s power output could be affected upon returning. The entire city of Cleveland hopes that isn’t the case.
Ramirez is more than just a player for the Guardians. He is the face of the franchise, the one that elevates their floor and inspires everyone to be better. They will miss him and all his contributions for a few weeks, but the hope is that he can still find the team in a position to compete when he gets back into the lineup.
