The Cleveland Guardians are about to have a great problem on their hands. They have too much young talent in several positions.
That’s why, even though they seem to be all set for the future with some of their prospects, the incumbent starters will also have to work tirelessly to prove that they’re worth keeping their positions. That’s the case with Brayan Rocchio. The switch-hitting middle infielder is putting in the work in the offseason.
As shown by Guardians Prospective on X, the 24-year-old has been hitting the gym pretty hard:

Rocchio was the team’s starting shortstop last season. He then lost his job after struggling mightily at the plate.
Ultimately, manager Stephen Vogt gave him another chance to be on the field. He moved him to second base, with Gabriel Arias handling duties at shortstop.
Now, he’s projected to stay in that spot for the beginning of the season, but that doesn’t mean the job is his. If anything, he might just be a placeholder.
The Guardians expect to call up former No. 1 pick Travis Bazzana at one point in the season. The No. 1 prospect in the organization should immediately take his spot.
As such, Rocchio could move back to shortstop, but he wouldn’t only have to beat Arias for the spot. Fellow star prospect Angel Genao might also get the nod at one point in the season.
The Guardians are in desperate need of offense and hitting right now. If Rocchio wants to make sure to get on the field early and often, he’s going to have to put in the work to be not only a more consistent hitter but also a more powerful one.
This team has a major logjam in the middle of the infield. That should only fuel some internal competition to bring the best out of all parties involved.
Nevertheless, that also leaves all those players with little to no margin for error.
