The Cleveland Guardians will host an intense competition for the starting shortstop gig.
Brayan Rocchio, Gabriel Arias, and Tyler Freeman are the three main competitors for the position.
The Guardians like all three, and have a soft spot for Freeman.
However, they have plans for Freeman even if he loses out in the spring battle mentioned above.
“#Guardians INF Tyler Freeman is continuing to take reps in the outfield in camp. If Freeman doesn’t win a starting job possibly at shortstop look for him to fill the role as a super utility spot with increased position flexibility if he can show he can handle the outfield in spring games,” Guardians Prospective tweeted.

If Freeman is able to master the outfield and can defend the position in games, his chances of making the team out of camp will be much greater.
In his minor league career, the infielder has been able to perform.
For example, in 24 games and 116 plate appearances in Triple-A last year, he hit an impressive .319/.457/.462.
However, he struggled at the MLB level with a .242/.295/.366 line in 64 contests.
Since Freeman doesn’t have much in the power department, he will need to hit for average and get on base to thrive offensively.
It’s easier said than done, though: last year, he posted a cool 12.9 percent walk rate in Triple-A, but a 6.0 mark in the majors.
It’s a matter of working and making adjustments.
If he can be at least an average MLB hitter, his versatility will give him a role.
If he can’t, his opportunities will likely be limited.
