Travis Bazzana probably did not like being left off the Cleveland Guardians’ Opening Day roster, as he was made to begin the 2026 season at Triple-A Columbus. However, he has not let it get him down.
In fact, he may be using that decision, plus being passed over for a recent promotion, as motivation. After a slow start, the second baseman is showing the full signs of his substantial offensive potential.
Bazzana has a notable hitting streak going in the minors, pushing it to six games with his latest performance.
“Cleveland Guardians 23-yr-old (2B) prospect Travis Bazzana collected three hits (3-6 R 2(2B) RBI) Thursday for Columbus, extending his hitting streak to six games. During streak: 11-24 5R 6(2B) 1RBI 4BB 2SB. AVG .458. OBP .536. Bazzana is currently hitting .282 with a .378 OBP and a 125 wRC+ on the season,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

Entering spring training, Bazzana was considered a candidate to be the Guardians’ starting second baseman. After he missed some time at camp playing for his native Australia at the World Baseball Classic, the Guardians decided to stick with their returning middle infield of Gabriel Arias at shortstop and Brayan Rocchio at second base to open the season.
However, Arias wound up on the injured list with a strained hamstring that could sideline him for up to eight weeks. Yet, instead of promoting Bazzana to that open roster spot, the Guardians opted to call up Juan Brito instead.
Now, with Brito slumping both at the plate and in the field, the door could be open for Bazzana to play his way into that promotion after all. After getting five hits in his first three major league games, Brito has just one hit in his past 18 at-bats. He also made a crucial ninth-inning error in a recent loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Meanwhile, Bazzana has been on his tear, raising his batting average more than 100 points from a season-low .167 in 13 games this month, helped by an earlier span of six hits over four games. Though service-time concerns may come into play, it will be hard for Cleveland to keep him in the minors much longer if things continue in this direction.
As the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, Bazzana’s major league debut has been much anticipated, and it could be on the horizon.
