The Cleveland Guardians snapped a four-game losing streak on Friday, beating the Detroit Tigers 3-2 at Progressive Field and taking their record to 38-33. Starting pitcher Tanner Bibee had another excellent outing to lower his ERA to a cool 3.96 and achieve his second win in a row after losing his first seven decisions.
Bibee completed seven strong innings and allowed just two hits. Both of them left the yard, though, which is why he surrendered two earned runs.

He also walked two and struck out eight. The right-hander seems to be rounding into form at the best possible time, as Cleveland takes on an unexpected challenge: competing with the Chicago White Sox for the division lead.
Hunter Gaddis worked a scoreless eighth to get his 10th hold of the year, and closer Cade Smith earned his 22nd save of the season with a perfect ninth.
Rhys Hoskins opened the bottom of the second with a double. After two outs, catcher Patrick Bailey singled to bring the slugger home with the first run of the night.
Immediately after that, Brayan Rocchio hit an RBI triple that plated Bailey and gave Cleveland a 2-0 lead over Detroit starter Jack Flaherty.
James Outman hit a home run off Bibee at the top of the third. Just like that, the Guardians’ lead was cut to just one run.
The Guardians would strike again in the bottom of the sixth against the Tigers’ bullpen. Angel Martinez hit a one-out double and came around to score on Steven Kwan’s RBI single.
Spencer Torkelson opened the top of the eighth with a homer that put the game 3-2, still with the Guardians in command. That signaled the end of Bibee’s outing. Gaddis and Smith took them to the finish line.
Kwan and Bailey both racked up two hits and an RBI apiece, and Chase DeLauter also had two knocks (one of them a double) and a walk. The rookie seems to be slowly getting out of his slump.
The Guardians will send Joey Cantillo to the mound on Saturday’s afternoon affair at 4:10 pm ET. The foe will be a familiar face who will be returning from injury: Tarik Skubal.
