Stephen Vogt does not hand out compliments he does not mean.
The Cleveland Guardians manager has been around the game long enough to know the difference between a pitcher who gets lucky and a pitcher who simply knows how to win. After watching Parker Messick go to work against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night, Vogt made it very clear which category his young left-hander falls into.
Vogt was asked about Messick following the outing, and he did not hold back, calling him a ‘big time pitcher.’
“That was unbelievable. That was outstanding. I mean, to go, you know, almost 7 innings against this lineup in a close game, and really, you know, maybe 2 innings where he got into a little bit of trouble, but he and Hedgey were navigating this lineup really well. I mean, this kid can pitch. He’s not afraid of any moment. Keeps proving it over and over, outstanding job,” Vogt said, per Mason Horodyski.

When Vogt says a young pitcher is not afraid of any moment, it carries real weight.

What made the outing so impressive was the team he was facing. The Braves are not a team you want to face when you are still building your resume as a starting pitcher. Their lineup is deep, they make contact, and they punish mistakes. Messick navigated nearly seven innings in a close game, keeping Cleveland in control when the game could have easily slipped away.
The young left-hander has been quietly building a case that he belongs in this rotation for the long term. Each start adds another layer of evidence, and Saturday night in Atlanta was perhaps the most compelling chapter yet.
The Guardians entered 2026 with questions about who would step up alongside the more established arms on the staff. Messick is doing his best to answer those questions.
Messick was a big-time pitcher doing big-time things on a big-time stage on Saturday.
At this rate, nobody should be surprised to keep hearing that phrase attached to his name all season long.
