Stephen Vogt is not getting caught up in the standings this week, and he made that clear in about as few words as possible.
The Guardians closed out their home schedule Sunday with a 1-0 win over the Athletics, capping off a three-game sweep behind a dominant start from Gavin Williams. The victory pushed Cleveland to 81-75 and briefly extended its lead in the AL Central to a game and a half over the White Sox, with six games remaining on the schedule. Asked about the mindset heading into the season’s final stretch, Vogt kept his answer short.
Vogt summed up his approach in five words, saying simply, “One day at a time.”

There was not much more to it than that, and that seemed to be the point. Vogt has leaned on that kind of message throughout the stretch run, avoiding any talk of magic numbers or scoreboard watching in favor of staying locked in on whatever game is directly in front of his team. With the division race still not fully settled and Chicago capable of cutting into the lead depending on how its own series plays out, there is little value in looking further ahead than necessary.
That approach lines up with how this Guardians team has carried itself for weeks now. Players have repeatedly echoed the same sentiment in their own words, pointing out that Cleveland cannot control what the White Sox do and can only focus on taking care of its own business.
Cleveland is off Monday before opening its final road trip of the regular season in Boston, with Parker Messick scheduled to start against the Red Sox. Six games remain, and based on how Vogt views it, the Guardians plan to treat every one of them exactly the same, regardless of what is happening elsewhere in the division.
