The Cleveland Guardians are heading back home with momentum, and manager Stephen Vogt made it clear he likes what he’s seen from his team during the opening road trip of the 2026 season.
After a challenging stretch that included matchups against the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland managed to come away with a winning record. That alone says a lot about where this team stands early in the year.
“We played really good baseball throughout, obviously you can nitpick anything you want, but we faced two of the best teams in the league and we’re going home over .500,” Vogt said.
Both Seattle and Los Angeles are viewed as playoff-caliber teams, making this road trip an early measuring stick for the Guardians.
And for the most part, Cleveland passed that test.
Even in games where the offense struggled, the pitching staff kept them competitive.
Vogt emphasized that the bigger picture is what matters most.
“We want to win series. We’ve tied one and we’ve won one. We win series all year and good things happen,” Vogt said.
Winning a series against a team like the Dodgers is a strong early statement, especially on the road.
Pitching played a major role in that success. Gavin Williams delivered one of the most impressive outings of the young season, striking out 10 batters over seven scoreless innings. Performances like that give the Guardians a chance to win against anyone.
There is still room for improvement, particularly at the plate. The Guardians know they will need more consistent production moving forward, especially as the season begins to settle in.
But the early signs are encouraging.
Teams that can handle adversity early are often the ones that stay competitive deep into the year.
Now, the focus shifts to the home opener.
“We’re going to enjoy this one tonight, enjoy the off day tomorrow, and be ready for our home opener. Can’t wait to see the fans Friday night,” Vogt said.
With momentum on their side and a strong first test behind them, the Guardians have positioned themselves well heading into the next phase of the season.
