Travis Bazzana continued to add signature moments to his rookie season on Saturday night, and afterward manager Stephen Vogt made clear just how much the young second baseman has already accomplished in such a short time in the majors. Bazzana’s walk-off home run capped a wild doubleheader split against Pittsburgh, making him the first Australian born player to hit a walk-off homer in the majors since at least 1900 and the first Cleveland rookie to do it since Bobby Bradley back in 2021. The blast also became the 104th walk-off home run at Progressive Field since it opened in 1994, a total that leads all of baseball by a wide margin over that span. For a player who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft and has only appeared in 67 major league games, moments like this stand out even more.
Vogt highlighted just how many firsts Bazzana has already checked off during his short time in the big leagues.
“You want to check all these boxes of first hit, first home run, first walk-off, first All-Star Game. And he’s checked a lot of them already in just three months. He is very mature. He’s a good player. He had a tough first game, and what’d he do? He responded with an unbelievable second game today,” Vogt said. “This kid doesn’t get down on himself. It’s a lot of fun.”
Vogt went on to praise Bazzana’s maturity and consistency, pointing out how the rookie bounced back from a difficult opener in the day-night doubleheader by delivering in the biggest moment of the nightcap, and noting that he does not let struggles at the plate linger. That resilience showed up earlier in the week as well, with Bazzana representing Cleveland at the All-Star Game in Philadelphia after slumping to a .167 average over his final 15 games before the break. Bazzana described the break as a chance to reset and see things with fresh eyes, and he carried that mindset into Saturday’s doubleheader, going 1-4 with a triple in the opener before following up with a 2-3 showing that included two walks and the decisive home run in the nightcap.
Bazzana’s continued growth throughout his rookie season has become one of the more encouraging storylines for a team dealing with injuries elsewhere in the lineup. As the second half unfolds, moments like Saturday’s walk-off only add to the belief that Cleveland found a foundational piece with the top pick.
