Cleveland Guardians fans can breathe a little easier after Tuesday night.
Stephen Vogt made his return to the Progressive Field dugout after missing two games with a respiratory illness that had been building for several weeks before finally forcing him to step away from the team over the weekend. The good news is that the manager is feeling significantly better, and by all accounts his return was a welcome one for everyone in the Cleveland clubhouse.
Cleveland reporter Tom Withers had the update after the game.
“Guards manager Stephen Vogt said he’s feeling much better after dealing with respiratory issue for weeks. It came to a head and worsened over the weekend. He said rest and medication helped. He missed being at the ballpark and welcomed some playful ‘grief’ upon his return,” Withers posted on X.

Vogt has been one of the more important figures in Cleveland’s recent success not just because of his tactical decisions but because of the environment he creates around the team every single day. His communication with players, his transparency with the media, and his willingness to be honest about both the team’s strengths and its struggles have made him one of the most respected managers in the American League.
The respiratory issue had clearly been affecting him for some time before it forced him to miss a few games. Tony Arnerich stepped in and handled the role admirably, picking up his first career managerial win Monday night.
But having Vogt back in that dugout matters. The Guardians are 23-21 on the season, in the middle of a stretch of games that will go a long way toward defining what kind of team they are in 2026, and navigating that stretch with their full coaching staff intact is something the organization genuinely needed.
Parker Messick takes the mound Wednesday afternoon in the series finale against the Angels at 1:10 PM ET. With Vogt back in the dugout and the Guardians having won five of their last seven games, the timing of his return could not be better.
