Brayan Rocchio’s move up in Cleveland’s batting order did not come with much fanfare, but it did come with a brief conversation that Stephen Vogt revealed mattered more than it might have seemed at the time. The manager does not often pull players aside for one-on-one talks, preferring to let his roster operate without unnecessary pressure, but Rocchio’s situation called for a direct word of reassurance.
“I rarely sit down with players because it feels like they’re in the principal’s office,” said Vogt. I definitely talked to Brayan and told him, hey, you’re moving up in the order, keep doing what you’re doing. It took him a couple of games to settle into that.”
The fact that he made an exception for Rocchio underscores just how significant the lineup shift was, both for the team’s needs and for a player who had built his entire approach around hitting near the bottom of the order.
Rocchio had quietly become one of the American League’s most productive number nine hitters before injuries to Jose Ramirez, Angel Martinez and Chase DeLauter forced Cleveland to rework its lineup entirely. Moving him up the order disrupted a role that had clearly been working, and Vogt’s brief conversation was designed to make clear that nothing about Rocchio’s approach needed to change, even if his spot in the order did.
The early adjustment period Vogt described lines up with how Rocchio performed immediately after the move. It took him a handful of games to settle in, but his recent numbers suggest he has found his footing in the new role. He enters Sunday hitting .269 with 5 home runs, 33 RBI and a .740 OPS on the season, with his production trending upward since the lineup change took hold.
Cleveland’s need for Rocchio to succeed in this expanded role will only grow as the team continues navigating its injury situation. Vogt’s brief but direct message appears to have done its job, and a manager who rarely calls players in for individual conversations clearly understood the moment called for one.
