Cleveland’s return from the All-Star break turned into a rough welcome back to the second half, and manager Stephen Vogt did not shy away from addressing the mistakes that defined the opening series against Pittsburgh. The Guardians dropped the rubber match 7-1 on Sunday, falling to 52-48 and slipping to second place in the AL Central behind the White Sox, who sit at 52-46.
Cleveland managed just one run over the first 16 innings of Saturday’s doubleheader before a late five-run outburst, and things got no better Sunday, when the Guardians had nine baserunners but saw five of them thrown out. Vogt was asked directly whether the effort had looked sloppy, and he pushed back on that specific characterization while still acknowledging the execution had not been good enough.
Vogt made clear the issue was not effort, but rather costly mistakes in situations that demanded better awareness.
“We’re a young team and we’re going to make mistakes,” Vogt said. “We’ve talked about this all year, it feels like. We want to make new mistakes. That’s where, again, myself, our coaches, we need to step up and teach more, and we need to get our players better.”
Vogt explained that the coaching staff shares responsibility for those mistakes, saying the priority now is to teach more and help the players improve moving forward rather than simply accept sloppy baserunning as the cost of playing a roster with seven rookies on it. Vogt did note that the Guardians have built their identity around being aggressive on the bases in recent seasons, and that while he trusts his players to push the envelope, Sunday featured a few instances where that aggressiveness crossed into overaggressive decision making.
Cleveland has managed to stay competitive without Jose Ramirez, still recovering from hamate surgery, and Angel Martinez, working his way back from a foot fracture, both of whom could return to the lineup in the near future. Until that happens, the margin for error remains thin for an offense already near the bottom of the league in production. Vogt struck an optimistic tone about the path forward, framing Sunday’s mistakes as learning points for a young roster that is still finding its footing during a stretch run that will only get more demanding from here.
