The Cleveland Guardians had snapped a five-game losing streak earlier on Tuesday, winning the first game of the doubleheader. They were defeated in the nightcap, though, as the Cincinnati Reds blanked them 2-0 in an exciting pitching duel.
Cleveland falls to 55-54 and keeps losing chances of catching the Chicago White Sox at the top of the AL Central. It was another frustrating night for the offense, as they were limited to three meager hits. They have now been shut out in three of their last four games dating back to the last series against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Gavin Williams was magnificent once again, but his offense let him down, and he was saddled with the loss. He pitched seven strong innings in which he surrendered just two runs on three hits and one walk. He struck out 12 and brought his ERA down to 3.71.
Unfortunately for Williams and the Guardians, the Reds put together a bullpen game for the ages in which five pitchers combined to shut them out. Caleb Ferguson was the opener, and he was followed by Julian Garcia, Jose Franco, Tejay Antone, and Emilio Pagan, who notched the save.
JJ Bleday gave the Reds an early lead with a solo home run against Williams in the opening frame, his 18th blast of the year. The game remained 1-0 until the fifth inning, when Dane Myers scored on a wild pitch.
Myers, by the way, made a game-ending catch crashing into the right-center field wall on a ball hit by Petey Halpin with a runner on second base.
Guardians’ hitters did work four walks, but they went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. That sealed their fate.
Only Travis Bazzana, Gabriel Arias, and Austin Hedges racked up hits on the night, all of them singles. Steven Kwan, Rhys Hoskins, Brayan Rocchio, and Halpin each drew a walk.
Working as the 27th man for the Guardians in the doubleheader, Daniel Espino pitched a clean inning in relief of Williams, walking one and fanning three.
Unless the front office goes out and brings in some much-needed offensive reinforcements, Cleveland risks losing the division title and, potentially, a postseason berth. They have until August 3, the day of the trade deadline, to upgrade the roster.
