Cleveland Guardians left-hander Parker Messick had another brilliant outing on Sunday, guiding his team to a much-needed win and pitching six innings while allowing a single run. His ERA for the season is now an incredible 2.50, the third-best mark in the American League behind Cam Schlittler and Dylan Cease.
It’s important to remind people that Messick is a rookie. Yes, he has pitched like an established ace in 2026, but since he completed just 39.2 innings in last year’s impressive cameo, the southpaw still qualifies for the AL Rookie of the Year Award. The other three hurlers they are talking about are Jose Fernandez, Hideo Nomo, and Dwight Gooden. That’s some pretty good company for Messick.
The Guardians’ lefty is one of the favorites for the award. Still, he’ll face stiff competition from a fellow first-year player in the same division: Detroit Tigers infielder Kevin McGonigle.
Many bookmakers and analysts even say that McGonigle is leading the race for the prestigious piece of hardware. The shortstop/third baseman has accumulated 4.9 fWAR and has 14 home runs, 12 stolen bases, 84 runs scored, and a 132 wRC+ in 573 plate appearances, before Tuesday’s games.
Messick, on the other hand, has racked up 4.2 fWAR so far. While fWAR is a perfectly useful stat, especially when comparing pitchers and hitters, the result of the award shouldn’t just be who had the most fWAR. There are other factors in play, but for what it’s worth, Messick has been a key cog in the Guardians’ success this year. He has developed into the unquestioned ace, and what’s more valuable than a frontline starter these days?
